Small business warned of mobile phone scam

We are joining forces with the Department of Commerce to warn consumers and businesses of the latest scam offering Apple and Samsung mobile phones and other devices at ‘unbeatable prices’.

The SBDC spotted the full-page colour ad in MyBusiness magazine, offering a free phone with every two purchased and ‘unbeatable prices’ for Apple iPads, Samsung tablets and cameras by Nikon and Canon.

Small Business Commissioner David Eaton says full page advertisements like this can be very tempting, and appearing in print wrongly gives them an air of legitimacy.

Scammers are becoming more brazen every day but people need to be on the alert for offers that seem too good to be true.

These types of scam advertisements often attract busy small business owners who are looking for a bargain but are not able to take the time to confirm that the offer is genuine.

Recovering lost funds from these types of scams is often impossible.
