SBDC e-news – November 2016

From the Comissioner

For 32 years, the Small Business Development Corporation has been at the forefront in helping small businesses in WA to develop and grow, and while our purpose has remained the same over the years, the assistance we provide is constantly evolving to address contemporary challenges and new ways of doing business.

This month we’re pleased to launch our new, improved online Business Licence Finder so you can easily discover the licences and permits you need to operate your business. Even if you’ve been in business for years, it’s a quick and easy way to check that you’re up-to-date with any new licences or permits that relate to your business.

The big news for small business this month is the implementation of the Unfair Contract Terms legislation coming into play on 12 November 2016. This is a very significant improvement for small business and will be invaluable to many small businesses in their dealings with larger organisations.

Next week, the WA Regional Small Business Awards will be held in Perth with entrants coming from around the State. There are finalists from all nine regions, contesting nine categories plus the overall title of 2016 Western Australian Regional Small Business of the Year. It’s a great achievement to be part of this event and I congratulate all of this year’s finalists.

In closing, you might have noticed my opinion piece in The West Australian last Monday regarding the retirement intentions for small business owners in WA. National research shows that many small business owners are relying on the sale of their small business to fund their retirements. This can be a great plan, or it could lead to financial ruin. We’re keen to know how many business owners in WA are planning to do this and how we can best assist this process. See the article in this month’s e-news for a link to our survey, we’d really appreciate your input.

We hope you enjoy our e-news for November and that you’ll take the opportunity to forward relevant information to your members or associates. If you’d like further details on any of the matters covered, please contact us on 13 12 49.
