Step 2: Attract Candidates

Now that you've clearly defined the position, and the skills and abilities a person needs to do the job it's time to attract candidates. The most obvious way to attract candidates is to advertise but remember almost 80% of vacancies aren't advertised! There are plenty of other channels to explore before you start advertising including:

Personal and business networks

It's surprising the number of high quality candidates you can find through your personal and business networks. Don't discount anyone. Even if the person you talk to is not looking for a job they could know someone who would be perfect for the position.

Think of all of the networks and groups that you belong to. This could include personal networks such as the local sports club, church, school or volunteer group, or business connections through industry associations and chambers of commerce. One of the bonuses of finding a recruit through this route is that it could provide you with an indication about their values and work ethic. Be wary of hiring friends or family; consider how working for you could change the dynamics of the relationship.

You should also explore any online networks that you've developed on social networking sites such as facebook, twitter or professional networks such as linkedin.

Internal recruitment

Look within your business. Is there someone who has the ability to develop their skill set to do the job? Promoting from within is a great strategy for rewarding and valuing good staff. The prospect of promotion will motivate staff and you'll be less likely to lose your good workers.

Engaging an employment agency

There are many profit and not-for-profit employment agencies. Some agencies specialise in certain industries or professions whilst others are more general.

To find an employment agency look up “employment services” in the yellow pages, on a search engine or see the Recruitment and Consultancy Services Association (RCSA) website. Remember to shop around so that you find the right agency for you. Before talking to an agency have a clear idea about the services you expect to receive.

If you are looking for a no-fee recruitment service you can access the services of the Federal government's Job Services Australia. Job Services Australia will give you professional recruitment advice and candidate screening and short listing.

Advertise the vacancy

Once you've decided to advertise the next question is where? Make sure that you choose a media channel that the job seekers you are after will use. For example although the majority of job seekers use online job sites some in certain areas such as trades still use the local newspaper to find job opportunities.

There are a many online job sites to choose from. Some are nationally based and others focus on WA or particular industries. Likewise you can advertise in a state-wide or community newspaper, or advertise in trade and industry publications.

Make sure that your advertisement clearly outlines the job you are offering and the type of person you are looking for. Look out for examples of newspaper or online advertisements for similar positions or targeting similar industries.

Remember to give job seekers a way to find out more information about the position. This could include providing more information on your website, and a phone number and the name of someone they can talk to about the job.
