Know the rules for new smoking laws

16 September 2010

Small businesses around the State are being encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new tobacco laws coming into effect on 22 September, 2010.

Acting Managing Director of the Small Business Development Corporation, Ms Jacky Finlayson, says some small retail and hospitality businesses may need to make changes to comply with the new laws.

"Restaurants and cafes that are already smoke-free venues will feel little or no impact from the new laws, while others such as delicatessens and newsagents may need to modify their point-of-sale and merchandising strategies," Ms Finlayson said.

The purpose of the new laws is to help reduce tobacco-caused health risks by tightening restrictions on where people can smoke, and on the promotion of tobacco in Western Australia generally.

Re-arranging stock promotions and replacing tobacco with other products to attract customers’ attention will help keep turnover levels high," Ms Finlayson said.

According to the Small Business Development Corporation, frequently changing product displays and moving regularly sold merchandise will also continue to entice customers.

Recognising items that typically make a small contribution to sales and replacing them with items that create "sales appeal" will further maintain the likelihood of impulse sales.

Increasing point of sale displays and promoting new products will also help meet customers' needs.

The Small Business Development Corporation's specialist business services team can provide advice and guidance on in-store marketing and promotions.

The WA Department of Health (DOH) also provides information and support for small business operators modifying their premises to comply with the new laws. "No Smoking" stickers are available free of charge atwww.health.wa.gov.au/tobaccocontrol
