Dry seasons assistance for business benefiting the bush

24 December 2010

The Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) has been rolling out the Government’s assistance package for small businesses affected by the dry season conditions, with very encouraging results.

The program provides assistance of up to $1,500 to non-farm small businesses affected directly or indirectly by dry season conditions. These funds are to be used for professional services (accountancy, financial or legal advice) to assess the current financial position of the business and to develop strategies for the future operations of the business.

SBDC Acting Managing Director, Mr Ray Buttsworth, says since promotion of the program began on 7 December, over 35 enquiries have been received, resulting in 15 vouchers issued and a further 12 applications in the process.

“Calls for assistance have come from businesses as far afield as Esperance, Cadoux and Merredin, Kelleberrin and Kulin, and several from the east Corrigin region,” Mr Buttsworth said.

“We want businesses to know that the process is not onerous. The grants are easy to access and quick to process, with a response available within a matter of days.

“The first step in the process is a ‘needs assessment’ to establish which services will best suit individual circumstances. This assessment can be undertaken by an SBDC Business Advisor, or local Small Business Centre Manager, and a voucher for an amount of up to $1,500 can be issued.”

Once a voucher is provided, an appointment can be made with the applicant’s preferred service provider. Wherever possible, applicants are encouraged to engage the services of local providers to allow a flow-on benefit to local businesses.

Payment for services rendered is then made by the SBDC, directly to the service provider.

The SBDC Dry Season Assistance Coordinator will be working throughout the Christmas and New Year period (excluding public holidays) and is encouraging businesses requiring assistance to make contact either direct to the SBDC or to a local Small Business Centre.
