Step 2: Finding the right business to buy

There are many avenues you can explore to find the right business to buy. Once you've found a business you also need to think about how it will fit with your lifestyle and your family .

Where are businesses for sale listed?

If you are looking to buy a business in Western Australia, consider checking out:

  • Newspapers publish a broad range of advertisements for businesses. However, be on guard for those offering deals that appear to be ‘too good to be true', because they generally are. Scammers often target the newspapers – so make sure you do your due diligence.
  • Accountants are another great source to consider. Often they have lists of clients who are looking at selling.

  • Business brokers and real estate agents are other excellent resources when searching for a business to buy. Talk to the Business Brokers Association about what to look for in a business broker and how to find one. You can also find a business broker or real estate agent that handles business sales by searching the yellow pages.

  • Trade journals, industry magazines and the internet often advertise businesses for sale. There are also many websites which specialise in selling business.

How do I know I've found the right business to buy?

The right business varies from person to person but an important consideration is whether that type of business is suitable for you and your lifestyle. Other questions you could ask yourself:

  • Are you suited, physically, psychologically and financially to that business?
  • Do you have the skills, experience, time, resources, vision and commitment to make this type of business a success?
  • Do your personal circumstances make this a good opportunity for you?
